AFCON Semi-Finals Betting Preview
Joe Crann tries to predict the most unpredictable tournament in world football for Betting Radio
So here we are. We're into the African Cup of Nations semi-finals. It's been a wild ride. There's been so many just typical African Cup of Nations moments - it's a mad tournament. It's why we love it so much. It's already the highest scoring AFCON of all time, which is great to know. And now we're going into the final straight we've got 2 semi-finals. First is Nigeria v South Africa and here there's a little bit of a grudge that goes back years.
The two sides were probably slight underdogs going into the tournament with South Africa a lot more of an underdog than Nigeria. Nigeria have a lot of great players and have done for many years, but this year people didn't see them getting this far and they've gone and done what they've done. They've defensively been excellent and they've had Victor Oshimen who really hasn’t fit form yet with just one goal
South Africa have had a great defensive record as well and they have a penalty master in goal with Ronwen Williams. Ronwen's been saving penalties for a long, long time and if this game goes all the way, he'll be backing himself once again. This is a tough one to call but I think Nigeria just edge it, JUST!
Then we've got the hosts Ivory Coast against DR Congo. Ivory Coast aren't meant to be in the tournament really. Everyone thought they were going out a while back, and they were they were heading out in the groups. They even fired the manager when it looked they were heading out in the groups and now they are into the semis!
I always think it's great when host teams get this far in tournaments. I've seen too many international tournaments die when the hosts go out. This is another tough one to call. DRC have looked really bright this tournament. They're not where they are now by fluke, but I think there's just a chance that the host nation and the huge buzz in the country can take them over the line. If you force me to pick one it’s Ivory Coast to keep the dream alive – this is AFCON after all!
It's an evens double that both Ivory Coast and Nigeria qualify, but if you think they both win in 90 minutes, that will get you odds of 5/2
