EFL Betting Preview - Matt Jones - Saturday 17th February

EFL Betting Preview – Saturday 17th February 2024

I'm sports broadcaster Matt Jones and I've picked out another EFL treble for you this weekend and things are certainly hotting up in the Football League. The winning line or the finish line is drawing close in all three divisions and that means each game has something riding on it, be it relegation, promotion or perhaps a place in the playoffs.

So let's start in the Championship and Rotherham against Watford is the first game I've picked out here last. Bottom placed Rotherham against 12th placed Watford and I think both teams will score in this game. Rotherham lost 2-1 to Hull in midweek. That was their 8th successive fixture without a clean sheet under Liam Richardson. Both teams have scored in only half of those games but if you look at their last sixteen matches in the league at the New York Stadium, both teams have scored in 11 of them. That is one of the highest ratios in the Championship.

They've also only failed to score in three home league games since April. As for Watford their last two fixtures have seen both teams score, including a 4-2 loss to Norwich - Inform Norwich on Tuesday. Only one clean sheet across their last 19 outings.

15 of those 19 games have seen both teams score.

Down into League One and I'm also looking at a both teams to score in Wycombe against Oxford. Both teams have scored in 9 of Wycombe’s last 10 outings and they haven't kept a clean sheet in any of those games that since a 0-0 draw with Leyton Orient at the back end of December.

7 successive home games for them at Adams Park have seen both teams score. I'm sure Matt Bloomfield would love to tighten up that leaky defence. As for Oxford, their visitors, who are sixth in the table at the moment and pushing for a place in the second tier. 5 successive games for them have seen both teams score no clean sheet for them in 13 outings, which is a real worry for their manager, Des Buckingham.

Both teams have scored in 11 of those 13 games and no team below them, by the way, has scored more than their 54 goals, bearing in mind their 6th in the table. That's quite a lot of teams below them. They do tend to score goals do Oxford – So Wycombe against Oxford, I think both teams could score in that one.

Down into League Two - Maybe this is a really obvious pick, but you've got two teams who've come up from the National League last season facing each other in League 2 this season, and both of them very much gunning for promotion to the third tier. It is, of course, Wrexham against Notts County, now Wrexham, against Notts County, I think is gonna have 3 or more goals. If you look at Wrexham, well, they've won the reverse fixture, 2-0 and two goals is something they like to do because they've scored at least two goals in a number of their home games this season.

Fourteen of their last 15 league and cup outings at the Racecourse Stadium. In fact, 43 home goals for them is the most in the entirety of League 2. But things haven't been all good for Phil Parkinson's side of late. They beat Sutton 2-1 last time out. But that came after losing four in a row, so no clean sheet for them in five. As for their opponents, Notts County well  they're the second top scorers in the division, was 65 goals this season. So again, another team who knows where the back of the net is, but they've got the worst defence in the entire division outside of the bottom three, they've conceded 58 times already. Not really the kind of defensive record you'd expect of a side who currently sits 7th in the table. But they've been doing so well at the other end of the table that they are still able to maintain that promotion push. No clean sheet in 6 games for them, five of which have been under their new manager, Stuart Maynard

Three or more goals in 13 of their last 15 outings, so Wrexham against Notts County, I think there'll be three or more goals in that.
