Liverpool v Fulham Carabao Cup Semi-Final 1st Leg Preview

David Easson

If last month’s league meeting between these two is anything to go by this could be a classic, but I’m not sure we’ll get another 4-3 at Anfield. Both sides are missing key players – Liverpool more than Fulham it has to be said – but Liverpool’s imperious home form combined with the Cottagers’ wretched away record should give the Reds the first leg advantage, but not by much.

Jurgen Klopp will want to make the second leg a formality but with no Trent, Salah or Szobozlai – along with the defensive losses of Robertson, Tsimikas and Matip mean the Reds are gasping for their Winter break, but the result at Arsenal in the FA keeps their great form going by using the whole squad.

Virgil Van Dijk should return from illness but he’ll need to be ready for a rejuvenated Raul Jimenez, who seems to thrive on the Anfield atmosphere.

Fulham were beaten 3-0 by Bournemouth in their last away league game and have won just two away games all season, conceding three or more in four of their last five away games across all competitions.

The Cottagers have lost Calvin Bassey to AFCON and Tim Ream is a doubt. They are leaky on the road and will want to take Liverpool back to London within their sights so I’d expect Marco Silva to keep this VERY tight in this first leg – but I just can’t see them keeping Nunez, Diaz and Gakpo out – but it’s the other Reds striker I’m backing here. Diogo Jota looks to be in the form of his life for the Reds, changing the game from the bench and probably getting a start here.

The Reds love late goals with their options from the bench but I’m taking Jota to score and Liverpool to win a tight and cagey game by 2 goals to 1.

Liverpool have scored 17 of their 43 league goals in the 76th minute or later and that winner could come very late again.

The Reds are averaging 3 goals per game at home, but it’s the tight win that I’m backing. This tie will not be over on the night.

Jota to score in a 2-1 win for the Reds is 22/1
