James Buttler looks ahead to Friday evening's Championship clash between The Pilgrims and The Hatters and finds his best bets.
A win on Friday evening would take Plymouth out of the bottom three, but they host a Luton side that has finally regained the Championship winning formula.
Plymouth Argyle
Wayne Rooney got a media caning with some dodgy early season results, particularly the 4-0 away drubbing by Sheffield Wednesday on the opening day. But, in a place famous for its maritime heritage, Wazza has steadied the ship with 2 draws, 2 narrow losses and a shock last-gasp 3-2 win over early season pace setters Sunderland.
The Home Park fans will know one win does not guarantee anything, but they’ll arrive on Friday only a little more confident, still in 20th and daring to dream, with a healthy mix of hope thrown in. As we all know, it’s the hope that ultimately slaps you around the face.
Luton Town
Last year’s sexiest Premier League manager, Rob Edwards, will have been disappointed not to have got out of the blocks in a higher gear than neutral this season.
I’ve not seen the research results on whether he, or indeed Rooney, are the housewives’ choice in the Championship, but 2 wins in the last two matches after just one point from the first four will make him feel a lot better about life when he looks himself in the mirror.
Luton are now in 15th, but it is only 5 goals in their six league matches and anyone with money on them steaming back to the top tier, they were my pick to win the league, are still waiting for a much-anticipated ascent through the gears.
Carlton Morris has found his scoring boots
Morris was the two-goal hero in the 2-1 win over Sheffield Wednesday last weekend, but I’m tempted to pick Elijah Adebayo at 23/20 anytime to break his season’s duck as Luton build on recent momentum.
Luton to make it three-in-three
It’s only been one goal in the three away matches for The Hatters so far, but with form returning, now is the time to get behind them before they hit top form and become prohibitively short betting-wise. The 19/20 on Luton to take all three points is enough for me.
Backing goals
Although it’s generally the worst betting advice to suggest backing something because you think it’s due to happen, rather than because its been happening, I smell goals. And, to be fair, 3 for Plymouth and 2 for Luton in their last outings means the trend is up. Both Teams To Score at 4/7 and Over 3.5 match goals at 13/8 are worth a punt.
James’ Championship Tips
• Elijah Adebayo at 23/20 to score anytime
• Luton Town to win at 19/20
• Both Teams To Score Yes at 4/7
• Over 3.5 match goals at 13/8
If you put all four of those selections into a William Hill Bet Builder, the price is 6/1.
