Do you want to be a better better when it comes to those weekend wagers on golf? Please pay attention. The PGA tour has returned to action with a full field event just outside of Minneapolis, Minnesota. The 3M Open enters its sixth edition, all of which have been contested at TPC Twin Cities.
A par 71 scorecard covering 7,431 yards, a field of 156 players will compete for $8.1 million. The top 65 in ties make the weekend in this penultimate PGA tour event before the FedExCup playoffs. Many of the men are trying to get inside that top 70 cutoff on the points list.
The action up north is hot and a whole lot drier than Scotland. The venue requires accurate ball striking. 15 holes have water in play along with 72 bunkers across the 18 holes.
Over the five editions, the average winning score is 19 under par. Of course, that's interesting considering TPC Twin Cities annually boasts the most water balls each year on tour of any venue. A careful combination of long iron play and putting will get you into contention.
Three par fives, five par fours over 450 yards and three par threes over 200 yards provide the test. Proximity from long range will set you up to score and separate from the field. The five previous three M winners have gained an average of five strokes on the field with their flat stick.
You better bring a hot putter to help you create those 20 subpar scores needed to take home the trophy. Tony Finau is the tournament favorite and one of 17 players in the field to play all five years. In five starts, Finau has a win and two more top seven results.
Close behind, you can back Sam Burns, Sahith Tagala and Open Championship runner up, Billy Horschel. I'm looking further down the betting board at Eric VanRoyen. Since his 27 under par win down in Mexico back in November, VanRoyen has played in five more birdie fests like the three M. He has five top eight finishes.
Eric can score and also possesses another great betting edge. VanRoyen went to the University of Minnesota. This venue is just 20 miles from campus.
The home crowd will be pulling for the native South African at his second home. You could read my complete betting card in the newsletter. Read the Line is published every Wednesday covering the PGA tour and LPGA.
